Why Did I Do That Again?

Oh dear, today's class was a doozy. You know how sometimes you just decide to throw caution to the wind and go with your gut feeling, even if it's probably not the best idea? Well, that’s exactly what happened in my third-grade classroom this morning. We were doing our usual Monday reading exercises when I suddenly thought, “You know what would be great fun? Let’s turn this quiet lesson into a poetry slam!” And off we went, me leading with poems about talking chickens and the kids giggling as they shared their own silly creations. By the end of it all, we were in fits of laughter and I felt so good for having brought some unexpected joy to our day. But then came reality: principal’s office at lunchtime, because apparently “turning reading hour into a joke fest” isn’t quite on brand with the official curriculum guidelines. And now here I am, trying to figure out how to explain it all and feeling like a grade-schooler myself for getting caught playing hooky from teaching duties. The upside? A lot of my students are walking around smiling today. Maybe that’s something worth being reprimanded for.
