The Socks Lie

So I did this thing the other day that I'm still not quite sure if it was okay to do. My kids are always complaining about having dirty laundry everywhere, but they never put their clothes in the hamper unless someone is nagging them to do so. Well, yesterday afternoon when they were out with friends and I was cleaning up around the house, I found a pair of my son's socks that he really loves, those funky ones with all the cartoon characters on them. He's been missing these for weeks and has begged me not to throw them away. So here's what I did: I slipped those clean socks into his laundry basket while he wasn't home. Now, if he asks me about it later, do you think I should tell him that I secretly put back one of his favorite pairs or just let him assume they magically reappeared? It feels a bit silly to be fretting over such a small thing, but there's something about telling little lies like this that gives me pause.
