That Time I Gave Away Half My Candy

So here's a weird situation that happened at work last week. You know how you always feel a little guilty about keeping all the candy from customer returns? Yeah, me too. Last year was rough, and every little bit helps, right? But then this past Tuesday, some kid comes in with a big bag of Halloween candy because his parents made him return it. They probably thought he'd eat too much, but honestly, they just need to get their heads out of the sand, sugar doesn't cause ADHD or hyperactivity like everyone says. It's all about good habits and routine, not about limiting what kids can have. But anyway, back to my confession. I've always felt a little icky about keeping all that candy, especially around Halloween when people expect it so much. But then I remembered one of the rules we have in the store: if something is returned after a certain date (I think it's November 1st), you're supposed to hand it over to a charity for donations instead. So, here comes this kid with a big bag full of chocolate and gummies, he probably had a bad case of cavities on his mind. The weird thing is, I didn't even know how much candy was in the bag until he opened up the receipt. When it came time to scan everything back into our system, there were more items than expected because some of them weren't individually scanned at checkout. The software did its magic and calculated a massive refund. It just so happened that this particular transaction meant I had way more candy on my hands than I usually get from returns. So here's the dilemma: give all this to charity, or keep it for myself? Because let's be honest, some of those candies are just too good to pass up. But then again, there’s that nagging feeling in the back of your head telling you to do what’s right. Plus, I’ve got my own family and kids who could use a little treat now and then. So, after some internal debating and checking for any real rules or policies on employee take-homes (spoiler: none), I ended up putting half the candy in an extra bag and giving it away to a local food pantry. Looking back, I guess that's one way to feel better about the whole thing. It’s not like I was stealing it from anyone; if the parents wanted their candy back, they’d have returned it before Halloween ended or donated it themselves. And honestly, half is still plenty for me and my family to enjoy, a win-win really! But yeah, now every time someone asks about Halloween leftovers, I remember this story with both a chuckle and a sigh.
