A Lie About The Tooth Fairy

So here's the deal. My kids are in that stage where they're convinced anything interesting is happening at night when they aren't around, like, seriously, who puts a light under the door for a midnight snack? But I digress. Today was a new low, though. Little Timmy lost his first tooth yesterday. We've had several conversations about how it'll be the Tooth Fairy tonight. The excitement has been building up for days. Anyway, so here's what happened: we went to bed last night and as per usual, I put my phone on silent mode and under my pillow just in case there were any emergencies during the night that needed immediate action (okay, fine, Netflix binges). Well, fast forward to this morning. Timmy wakes up all excited because he's sure it was the Tooth Fairy who left something under his pillow last night. Only problem is, I forgot my phone upstairs while I went downstairs for a midnight snack and it just so happened that my wallet was also on the bedside table. In my haste to grab my phone before Timmy came down (he woke up earlier than expected), I grabbed the wallet instead of leaving an envelope with some money like we promised him. He was so disappointed he actually started crying. So, naturally, I made a split-second decision, I told him it was the Tooth Fairy but she forgot her bag and left my wallet as a consolation prize for his first lost tooth. Now he's all smiles again because he's convinced that the Tooth Fairy has some very fancy tastes in wallets (mine happens to be one of those sleek leather ones). But here’s where I’m really conflicted: is it okay to tell such a white lie? After all, we're trying to teach our kids honesty. On the other hand, it prevented him from having a sad first morning without his tooth fairy money. Plus, now he'll expect this kind of 'consolation prize' every time! I just feel so guilty about misleading him. Is there such a thing as an acceptable lie for the sake of avoiding disappointment? I'm starting to wonder if maybe next time it's better just to be honest and explain that sometimes people make mistakes, even parents. But then again, what parent wants their child to grow up thinking that losing teeth is supposed to bring tears instead of joy? Ugh, parenting can be so complicated sometimes.
