Just Doing My Job? More Like Keeping The Peace

You know that feeling when you just want to break the rules but deep down, you know it's for everyone's own good? Well, I'm talking about that moment in my ward last week. We had a patient who was particularly difficult and refused any kind of help or comfort. His family was at their wits' end too, so I decided enough was enough. I quietly slipped him some pain medication without the doctor's explicit okay because I knew he needed it for his intense discomfort. Sure, technically that's a no-no, but let me tell you, watching someone in agony day after day is not something any human should have to endure. His family thanked me profusely later, and honestly? He was calmer and more cooperative than ever before. So yeah, I broke the rules for the greater good, and if I had to do it again, I probably would.
