When I Played the System Like a Pro

I've been working in retail for about three years now at this small chain of clothing stores. It's mostly routine and tedious stuff, but there are moments when you find yourself getting creative just to spice things up or get ahead a little bit. One day, it was inventory week, which meant everyone got really busy trying to stay on top of the endless lists of items we had to count and log into our system. As I was about to clock out for my shift, I noticed one last item that hadn't been accounted for: a hoodie hanging in an odd spot between two sections of clothing. It seemed like it might have come from another location's shipment mistake or maybe a customer accidentally left it behind. Whatever the case, my manager had been clear, no personal items could be taken home or kept on hand. But something about that hoodie called to me. Maybe it was its soft fabric or its cool design, it just looked like something I'd enjoy having around. So here's where things got a little tricky. Instead of taking the easy way out and turning it into lost property, which would likely end up in a donation box anyway, I decided to play my hand. I put on one of our black employee badges and hid behind a stack of sweaters. Then, with some quick thinking, I snuck back into the store after clocking out, pretending to be a regular customer looking around for something specific. No cameras were in that area, so it was my chance to swipe the hoodie from its spot without being detected. It felt like a movie scene unfolding right before me, I slipped the hoodie over my head and walked off confidently as if I'd just found exactly what I came there for today. The next day at work, when my manager brought up that last missing item during inventory checks, she seemed genuinely confused but also grateful to have closed out our counts correctly. Now, some might see this as cheating or something unethical, but honestly? I didn't feel too guilty about it once everything settled down. In fact, wearing the hoodie regularly made me realize how valuable it was, and not just financially. Sometimes in retail, you've got to do what you gotta do to survive and have a little fun along the way.
