When I Wasn't There For My Best Friend's Emergency

Hey everyone, so this is kind of a heavy one for me to talk about because it’s something that happened recently and it’s really weighing on my mind. I’m not sure if anyone else has gone through anything similar, but here goes: my best friend Sarah called me last week, late at night, crying. She was in the middle of some big family drama involving her parents arguing loudly and one of them threatening to leave the house right then and there. I could hear it all over the phone, she sounded so scared and alone. I remember thinking about how much I wanted to be there with her. In that moment, I was home, but my little brother was up sick and had been throwing up for hours. My mom was dealing with him, trying to calm him down, and she couldn’t go out either because of the risk of spreading whatever germs he had. I didn’t want Sarah to feel like I’d abandoned her, so I tried explaining all this while also promising to be there as soon as possible once things calmed down at home. But that didn’t really help in the moment. She was still upset and ended up hanging up on me. That’s when everything got worse, the next day, she messaged me that they had separated and her dad left. Now, I’m not saying it’s all my fault or anything. Obviously, family situations are complex beyond what a friend could control. But it just feels like I let Sarah down big time by being in the wrong place at the worst possible moment. She hasn’t really talked to me much since then either, and honestly, that stings. I want to do better next time, be more present for my friends even if it means putting aside some of my own issues first. But right now, I’m just sad about not being there for her when she needed someone the most.
