Lied About Knowing The Way Around Town Already

So I just moved to this new city and am trying my best to blend in and not seem like a total outsider. But here’s the thing, everyone here acts like they’ve been living here their whole life and knows all the back roads and shortcuts. I’m kind of terrible at remembering routes or even recognizing familiar places if I’m driving somewhere for the second time. It’s embarrassing because when people ask me to pick them up somewhere or drop them off, I have to admit that sometimes I really have no idea where I am going until I check Google Maps again. Today was especially bad. My friend Alex invited me over to their place to hang out, and instead of saying “Hey, this is new, can you give me a little help with directions?” I went with the classic: “Oh yeah, totally know that area! Just head north on Maple Street for about half a mile.” In my defense, it’s not like they asked for exact directions. It was more of an assumption based on body language. Anyway, here comes the funny part, I actually ended up taking the wrong route, missing Alex's street entirely and getting lost in some weird industrial area full of warehouses and construction sites that I’d never heard of. This is after my car broke down from being overfilled with air freshener sprays which messed with the heating system. I eventually circled back around and finally made it there, only to realize Alex had already gone out because their neighbor had told them about a street fair happening nearby and they weren’t waiting on me. So I ended up spending my evening wandering aimlessly in search of this non-existent street fair with my GPS running low on battery. I felt so embarrassed telling Alex what happened, but the funny part is now he’s just saying stuff like “Well if you can find your way to a street fair while lost, that’s impressive!” and I have to play it cool when in reality, Google Maps had saved me again. I guess my biggest confession is probably how often I lie about knowing where I am or where I’m going just to avoid the judgment of sounding like a complete stranger in this new place. But here's the thing, I’ve never been good at hiding my ignorance and would rather just admit it if someone asks, but sometimes I let my pride get in the way. So yeah, my big white lie or pettiest confession? Probably not knowing how to navigate this city yet and acting like I do. But hey, one day at a time.
