I May Have Gone Too Far with My Students

I've been teaching for five years now and generally pride myself on my professional conduct. But last week, I made a significant mistake during class, one that keeps nagging at me. It all started when we were discussing a sensitive topic related to mental health and stress management. A student raised their hand with a question that seemed very personal. Out of concern for them, I stayed behind after class to talk privately about coping mechanisms. As the conversation went on, it veered into territory where my advice became more directive than supportive, I felt like they were overwhelmed by school pressures and needed guidance, but looking back, I might have crossed professional boundaries with overly intrusive suggestions...It was a learning moment for me about how far one can push personal engagement while maintaining professionalism. The student seemed appreciative at the time, but since then, I've been second-guessing whether my advice came across as more authoritative than needed, potentially making them feel uncomfortable or judged instead of helped....I reported it to the administration and explained everything honestly, hoping that no one was hurt by the situation. But still, every time I see this student in class now, I can't help but worry if there are any lingering feelings of unease from our conversation...
